Be A Disaster Action Team Volunteer
Through our local Disaster Action Team (DAT), The Hancock County Red Cross is committed to responding to and meeting the emergency needs of individuals and families who have been affected by a disaster that impacts a single family or small group of families living in a single building or complex. The most common type of disaster to which the DAT responds is residential fire. While large scale disasters such as tornadoes or hurricanes receive widespread media coverage, disasters affecting one family or a few families receive much less media attention. But for the individual or family whose home is destroyed by fire, the effect is the same, and we are committed to meeting their disaster-caused needs.
Emergency needs are defined as those basic necessities essential to everyday living based on immediate needs of the clients, not on actual loss of property or belongings. Assistance provided by a Disaster Action Team may include food, clothing or temporary housing (shelter). Emergency physical and mental health care services may also be provided on an as-needed basis.
The Disaster Action Team is an integral part of the chapter disaster preparedness organization and serves as the chapter's first on-the-scene contact with disaster situations.
